The 2012 Bowl Championip Series gets underway on Monday after a plethora of forgettable bowl games to end 2011. But first, Capital One Bowl Week comes to a close featuring three afternoon games. The Georgia Bulldogs face Michigan State in the Outback Bowl, the Florida Gators get salt rubbed in their year old Urban Meyer wound against Ohio State in the Gator Bowl, and the South Carolina Gamecocks play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Capital One Bowl.
Following the afternoon pigskin party, the BCS begins with two match-ups on Monday evening. The Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks kickoff the BCS double dip in the Rose Bowl Game. Wisconsin won their first six games in 2011, before losing two in a row and then winning out to capture the Big Ten Conference championship. On the other side, the Ducks nearly laid an egg in losing their opening game to LSU. However, Oregon rebounded by winning 11 of their next twelve football games to earn the Pac-12 Conference title. Look for Oregon to badger the Badgers.
In the nightcap, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are the lone BCS representative from the Big 12 as they take on the Pac-12 runner-up, Stanford. The Cowboys have a much more explosive offense than the Andrew Luck Crew. The Cardinal will need to control the time of possession, and take care of the football to have a chance to win. If the Cardinal defense can not get consistent pressure on Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden then Stanford will have a difficult time keeping up with the Pokes.
Outback Bowl: Georgia Michigan State: Look for a fast start from both teams before each defense settles down toward the end of the first half. The Bulldogs understand the importance of this game, and Bulldog Nation will begin 2012 with a big win. Dawgs pull away from the Spartans in the fourth quarter. Georgia 34, Michigan State 24
Capital One Bowl: South Carolina-Nebraska: Connor Shaw and Taylor Martinez meet in a battle of mobile quarterbacks. The speed of the Gamecock defense will corral Nebraska’s offensive attack, and the South Carolina signal caller will make enough plays to win in what will hopefully be Alshon Jeffrey’s last college game. South Carolina 24, Nebraska 20
Gator Bowl: Ohio State-Florida: I am not a doctor, but there seems to be a minor “miracle” unfolding in college football as it relates to Urban Meyer’s health. Meyer retired, then changed his mind during a period of a few days in 2009. Following the 2010 season Meyer retired for the second time because of a weak heart muscle. At the time, the former Florida Gators Head coach said he needed to rest and be a family man. Fast forward to the present and family time is over. How is that heart muscle feeling Urban? I guess the chance to coach Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller does a coach’s heart good. Oh, what about an actual bowl prediction? Who cares? The Urban Meyer sideshow is much more fun. I’ll pick a winner anyway. Ohio State 27 Florida 14
Rose Bowl: Oregon-Wisconsin: Wisconsin is a smash mouth football team that likes to run the football. When the defense attempts to crowd the box the Badgers call on talented quarterback Russel Wilson to throw the ball down the field. Conversely, Oregon prefers to play as fast as possible because the Ducks rely on a quick tempo to tire out the defense. In the end, Wisconsin will not be able to keep up with the Ducks. Oregon 41, Wisconsin 28
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State-Stanford: Andrew Luck has a bright future ahead of him, but Stanford lacks the speed and athleticism required to keep up with the Cowboys. The Oklahoma State offense will have a chance to put up big numbers against the Cardinal. Pokes win, capping off a great year for Mike Gundy’s bunch. Oklahoma State 42, Stanford 31
Enjoy the games on what should be a very entertaining Monday of football. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!
